Kilimanjaro Machame Route – 7 Days

Kilimanjaro Machame Route

Kilimanjaro Machame Route is the second most popular route, 26 km long, and it is considered the most beautiful route up Kilimanjaro. With a gradual ascend through the forest you emerge to see wide views of the moorland on Shira plateau, Kibo and Western Breach. The different kinds of vegetation found along the route make it the most sceneric route. We are approaching the summit with an acclimatisation day by walking in the same heights (Barafu Camp to Karranga Valley Camp), and another day by stopping at Karranga Valley camp (we are one of few tour operators offering this). There are no mountain huts on this route; the accommodation is in mountain tents. Yes, this I want to experience. Contact me.

Kilimanjaro Machame Route done in six days is physically challenging for most people. The last two days (the trek from Barranco to Barafu and then the overnight trek to the summit) require mental and physical toughness, due to the high altitude and short amount of time to rest before the overnight summit attempt.

Please Note: That we only organise private treks, there will be only yourself and your travel partner(s) on the tour!

This itinerary starts and ends in Arusha or Moshi. An additional days stay in Arusha can be booked for an extra $200.

Day 1: Arrival

You will be met at the International Airport of by your Driver/Guide and our representative. We will take you to the Mount Meru Game Lodge. This charming lodge is situated at the sole of majestic Mt Meru and provides wonderful views. Watch wild animals in their natural habitat at the lodge’s attached game sanctuary. After breakfast we’ll transfer you to the Machame Park Gate (5,870 ft./1,790 mt.). After registering with the park authority, we’ll begin our climb through the lush forest. Trekkers will likely hear the many exotic birds in the canopy above, and many even see black & white colobus monkeys and sykes monkeys as they hike along the knotted roots We’ll continue on to some heath land before reaching our overnight camp at Machame Camp (9,875 feet, 5-7 hours of walking), just above the forest zone. The trek is quite long, thus not steep. All meals included.

Day 3: Mt Kilimanjaro – Machame Camp to Shira Camp

We begin up the steep track through a savannah of tall grasses, and trees of Giant Heather and Erica. We’ll overnight at Shira Camp (12,615 feet, 4-5 hours of walking). All meals included.

Day 4: Mt Kilimanjaro – Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

We’ll draw nearer the peak as we get closer to the Lava Tower. The trek becomes a bit more strenuous as the trail steepens on the approach to the lava Tower, a 300 foot tall volcanic plug which marks an exposed pass at 15,000 feet. In the afternoon, descend the steep track into the Great Barranco Valley. Barranco Camp is set on a col (flat area) enclosed on three sides with steep valley walls and the Kibo massif itself. Hanging glaciers glint in the sunshine above, amidst the eerie landscape of plants such as the giant groundsels (Senecio Kilimanjari), and the uniquely endemic Giant Lobelia. Then we slowly ascent to our overnight stop at Barranco Camp (12,990 feet, 5-6 hours of walking). All meals included.

Kilimanjaro Rongai Route 7 Days

Kilimanjaro Rongai Route

The Kilimanjaro Rongai Route retains a sense of untouched wilderness lost on the crowded Marangu and Machame trails. This route approaches the mountain from the north not far from the Kenyan border. Yes, I want to climb Kilimanjaro. Contact me for this private tour.

This route is the easiest of all the routes, it has a relatively gentle gradient and short daily stages as it winds its way from the starting point just south of the Kenya-Tanzania border through attractive farmland and delightful forest to several other climate zones, adding considerably to the interest of the trek.

There are magnificent views over the Amboseli Plains and genuine possibilities for wildlife viewing. An extra day is added to the standard 5-day itinerary to hike to the beautiful Mawenzi Tarn beneath the towering spires of Mawenzi; this also ensures maximum acclimatisation for the climb to the summit.

The final ascent is arduous and made in darkness starting around midnight but the reward is a spectacular dawn view of the glaciers and ice cliffs of the summit, and across the East African plains far below. Descending through lush forest, there is a final day to relax and recover before the flight home.

Kilimanjaro Rongai Route is much drier than the other routes and you might even encounter an elephant on the way. Accommodation in tents.

Please Note: That we only organise private treks, there will be only yourself and your travel partner(s) on the tour!

Day 1: Arrival

You will be met at the International Airport of by your Driver/Guide and our representative. We will take you to the Mount Meru Game Lodge (or any other suitable hotel depending on your arrival time). Our Kilimanjaro Expert will come to meet you and to provide you with a briefing on your climb. Dinner.

Day 2: Kilimanjaro Rongai Route Hike up through the Rongai Forest Approx. 2625 m

In the morning we pick you from your hotel in Arusha, Moshi or Machame and drive to the town of Nalemoru on the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro and the trailhead five miles outside of town. From the Park entrance you start the climb passing through pine forest and a short stretch of mountainous rainforest until we reach the heather and moorlands. It is about a 4-5 hour walk to Sekimba camp at approx 2625m but we advise people to go very slowly. The forest teems with bird life and colobus and other monkeys may be seen. We should arrive late afternoon so the rest of the day will be used to relax and recheck your equipment.

Overnight at a campsite. All meals included.

Day 3: First Camp to Kikelewa Moorland(3630 m)

Continue through the forest (on this side is no such forest belt), eventually encountering the moorlands just below a large lava overhang known as Second Cave . Here we have lunch, then traverse the open moorlands toward the spectacular peak of Mawenzi, Kilimanjaro’s second major peak rising. Our second camp is at Kikelewa, (relative) shortly before reaching the saddle that connects Mawenzi to Kibo and Uhuru peaks. (5-6 hours hiking.)

Overnight at a campsite. All meals included.

Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Hut

Rising early you climb steadily to craggy jugged peaks of Mawenzi.(one of the volcanic peaks) camp beneath Mawenzi at approx 4,300m. Some climbers take an alternative route away from Mawenzi and camp on the north side of the saddle (Mawenzi Tarn Hut is in the north).

Overnight at a campsite. All meals included.

Day 5: Outward School Hut (School Hut or preferably Kibo Hut)

Trek to the Outward Bound Hut (School Hut or preferably Kibo Hut) at 4,715m between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Mountain vistas are fabulous as we emerge onto the saddle between glacier-covered Kibo and rock-crowned Mawenzi (these mountain views alone are worth the effort of the trek!). We’ll arrive by lunchtime, and have the afternoon to organize and rest up for the summit attempt. We’ll turn in early (since we’ll be arising before midnight).

Overnight at a campsite. All meals included.

Day 6: Kibo Camp to Gilman’s Point to Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

This is the hardest day of the climb and an early start before midnight or one, where it is dark cold and where you use your head torch for the first few hours. You will pass (rest and have coffee at) Hans Meyers cave after about 3hours climbing. Depending on weather conditions the temperature can be as low as -25 c. At dawn you should reach Gilman’s point and usually see a spectacular sunrise as you stand above the clouds. From here if you have enough energy left a further 1 and a half hours walk before you are standing on the highest part of the African continent- Uhuru Peak. A quick photo session and then you descend down to Kibo and then on to Horombo at 3700m – now a well earned dinner (beer!! – no permanent kiosk or provided) and good sleep. (11-12 hours hiking.)

Overnight at a campsite or Horombo Hut. All meals included.

Day 7: Horombo –to Park Gate – End or Extension

Descending across the moorland and into the forest to Mandara hut, where a meal is served, a walk of about 3 or 4 hours and the last stretch of 2 hours trough the rain forest to Marangu Gate. After bidding our farewells to our guide and porters, we’ll take you to Arusha or Moshi for extension.

14 days Happy Family Summer Special Northern Tanzania Safari and Zanzibar 2015

Happy Family Summer Special Valid for June/July/August 2015

A combination of some days in the bush at Northern Tanzania and at the white palm-fringed beaches of Zanzibar is one of our most requested programs, and we have adjusted it to make it even more suitable for the needs of families and children. It combines all Tanzanian highlights like Lake Manyara, Serengeti and Ngorongoro with some outdoor activities ‘beyond game drive’. Emphasis has been laid on short distances between destinations and family/children friendly accommodations – all with family rooms or interconnecting rooms, and occasionally a swimming pool to freshen up after a long dusty day on game viewing.

Day 01 ARRIVAL

You will be met at the International Airport of Kilimanjaro by your driver/guide and our representative We will take you to the Meru View Lodge or Kiboko Lodge , both simple but charming lodges at the slopes of Mt. Meru with beautiful views. Our safari manager will come to meet you and to provide you with a safari briefing.

Day 02 Arusha National Park

After breakfast drive to Arusha National Park, once the site of the action packed Hollywood movie Hatari, starring John Wayne and Hardy Kruger. You pass by herds of zebra, buffalo, and giraffe on the savannah. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Momella Lake, famous for huge flocks of colourful flamingos and its views at majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro. You continue in the afternoon with a game drive around the different habitats in this truly beautiful national park. There are black and white colobus monkeys (unique to this location northern Tanzania), Sykes’s and vervet monkeys, shy forest duikers, elusive leopards and substantial herds of antelope.
If you wish, you can hike at the slopes of Mt Meru in dense forest or at the Crater rim while an armed ranger escorts you to protect you from some of the larger animals.

2nd Overnight at Meru View Lodge or Kiboko Lodge in Arusha. All meals included.

Yes, great! But we would like to amend the itinerary a little.

Day 03 Lake Manyara

After breakfast we depart for Lake Manyara (driving time some 2.5 – 3 hours). Nestling at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park is recognized for its incredible beauty. You can see many game animals such as Buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe, Impala, hippo and others.
Overnight at the nice, intimate Rift Valley Lodge perched on a escarpment granting great views over Lake Manyara with grazing animals towards the Rift Valley Escarpment. All meals included.

Day 04 Exploring Lake Manyara and its surroundings

After spending most of the previous days in the car you might enjoy to get out of the car for some physical activities and to explore the area at the Rift Valley Escarpment by walk guided by well trained local guides. First you walk through Mto wa Mbu Village where your guides introduce you to the local village and social life, to economic activities, education and many others things. Instead of the village tour your guides can also take you to a large banana plantation, one of the basics of local economy life and explain you about this agricultural meaning. Later you can walk through a small forest inhabited by monkeys and dikdiks which leads to Miwaleni River. Following the river is a thrilling (maybe little strenuous) hike and climb over rocks and stones until you finally reach Miwaleni Waterfall hidden in the Rift Valley Escarpment.
After lunch at your lodge and some rest you can go for a bicycle ride in the plains towards Lake Manyara.

Overnight at Rift Valley Lodge. All meals included.

Day 05 Lake Manyara-Serengeti

After breakfast you start on your way to Serengeti National Park (driving time some 4 hours, but with plenty to see on the way!) En route you will see grazing zebras, antelopes and giraffes and sometimes some buffalos hiding in the bush. You will visit a Maasai Boma (traditional village) where some Maasai Warriors will welcome you, show you around and explain their traditional life. They will also show you their famous jumping dance and invite you to join in if you like! You can also see inside houses, meet children, ask questions and take photos!
After stopping for your picnic lunch on a kopje (rock outcropping) in Serengeti you will continue further into the park and go on a game drive in the afternoon. Depending on the time of year and the migration of the herds you can expect to see wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds and other species.
Tonight and the following night you spend in a comfortable tented camp at the edge of the famous Serengeto, with views over the endless savannah with some animals and typically African acacia trees. Enjoy some relaxing hours at the camp fire under open sky after dinner, chatting with other guests and the charismatic security guards.

Overnight at Mapito Tented Camp at Ikoma, Northern Serengeti. All meals included.

Return to your lodge for a relaxed lunch under the shade of an old acacia tree.
In the afternoon you can go out again on game drives or undertake a nature walk around the camp with some resident tribesmen. They are happy to share their knowledge of plants and animals surrounding them and introduce you into their use of traditional bow and arrow for hunting.

2nd Overnight at Mapito Tented Camp at Ikoma, Northern Serengeti. All meals included.

Day 07 Ngorongoro

After breakfast you pass into Ngorongoro Conservation Area and descend into the crater for a wonderful game drive (with a picnic lunch) inside the Ngorongoro Crater often described as one of the wonders of the world. It is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and a natural sanctuary for some of Africa’s densest animal populations. It is one of the few places where the rare black rhino can be observed in their natural setting. As very few animals migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and other species. With a bit of luck the ‘Big Five’ can be spotted during one game drive only.

Overnight at Endoro Lodge or Bouganvillea Safari Lodge. All meals included.
