Great Safari Tanzania – Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVAL

Your Great Safari Tanzania starts when you are met at the International Airport of Kilimanjaro by your Driver/Guide and our representative. We will take you to the Rivertrees Country Inn This charming Lodge is situated at the banks of picturesque Usa River on an old German coffee estate and offers stunning views towards Mt. Meru and Mt Kilimanjaro. Alternative accommodation is at Mount Meru Game Lodge with an animal sanctuary attached. Our safari manager will come to meet you and to provide you with a briefing on the great safari circuit Tanzania. Dinner included.

Day 2: Lake Manyara

The driver/guide will pick you up at 8 am, then you’ll drive across the floor of the Great Rift Valley to Lake Manyara National Park for a game drive. This beautiful park with it’s lush vegetation and tropical forests of giant fig and mahogany trees, takes its name from the Maasai word for “euphorbia tirucalli”, a bush which is used to make a thorny hedge to protect their cattle.

Elephant, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and a variety of antelope inhabit the park as well as a variety of monkeys and a large population of hippo’s. If you are lucky you may see the Manyara lions, well known for their tree climbing habits, lazily resting on the branches of an “Acacia tortilis” tree. The bird life is also abundant, with flamingos, pelicans, horn bills and plenty of forest species.

Day 3-4: Lake Natron

In the morning you drive via Engaruka Town towards Lake Natron on a partly bumpy and dusty road. En route you see many Masai villages, termite mounds, gazelle, giraffe, zebra, baboons, bee boxes, and birds such as vultures, ostrich, starlings, Cory Bustards, and kites. The transfer takes you some 4 hours. After checking in at your lodge and some lunch you go in the afternoon on a guided walk around Lake Natron the lowest point of the Great Rift Valley in Tanzania (600m / 2000 ft) and famous for a vast numbers of flamingos and other water birds due to a high concentrate of in sodium carbonate, algae, and zoo plankton. You can go for a hike up the Ngare Sero River which flows in the Lake Natron In contrast to the surrounding dry landscape, here you can find a small paradise. After a strenuous walk up the stream, we reach the source of the river, in cascading waterfalls the river gushes out of the mountains. It is an excellent swim in the river and under the waterfalls for a nice cool-down from the hot sun. There may be baboons or other wildlife in the gorge.

Day 5: Lake Natron – Serengeti

After breakfast you visit Lake Natron to see the flamingos Lake Natron is famous for. If you wish, you can walk at the lake shore in salty water. Afterwards you start your way towards Serengeti with some wildlife and many Maasai villages to see along the way. You cross Loliondo Area, a concession bordering Serengeti National Park and drive further towards the Western Corridor where the Great Migration is expected to pass through in June/July. After stopping for your picnic lunch on a kopje(rock outcropping) at Serengeti you will continue further into the park and go on a game drive on your way to Serengeti.

Day 6: Serengeti

Early morning game drive to see also nocturnal predators returning from hunting and animals waking up in early morning light followed by full day of game drives around Serengeti. Depending on the time of year and the migration of the herds you can expect to see wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds and other species. Your Driver/Guide will be in contact with other Safari drivers and will amaze you with his skill at locating the hidden animals.

Day 7: Lake Victoria

In the morning proceed with Game-drives at Serengeti on the way to Lake Victoria. In the afternoon drive into the nearby hills to take a look at rural Africa, passing through the small villages of the Sukuma people, who grow cotton, ground nuts, sorghum and cassava as well as keeping livestock. Life carries on simply as it has done for centuries, but with a few poignant reminders of the 20th Century!See the local school and take a stroll to the top of a small kopje.

Day 8: Lake Victoria

In the morning traditional fishing canoe trip to a fishing village. Local fishermen will paddle the canoes and, on the way, the scene is typical of the lakeshore with women toiling in the fields and men fishing. The paddlers sing as they work taking one back in time as they sing traditional songs of home, of cattle and of life. In the distance can be seen the white lateern sails of fishing boats or dhows, returning from a night of fishing far out on the Lake. In the afternoon you proceed with village visits around Lake Victoria. Another Highlight of the day is the visit at a traditional healer in one of the Sukuma villages.

Day 9: Lake Ndutu

Return to the Serengeti. Depending on the time of year and the location of the migration herds, you can expect to see wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds and other species. Your driver/guide will be in contact with other safari drivers and will amaze you with his skill at locating the hidden animals.

Day 10: Ngorongoro

After breakfast we depart for Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Upon arrival at late morning, you will spend the day game driving in the crater. As very few animals migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and many other species.

Day 11: Ngoronogoro – Lake Eyasi

From Ngorongoro you proceed to Lake Eyasi – home to the hunter-gathers, an ethnic group of the Hadzabe Bushmen bearing similar characteristics to those of Bushmen in Southern Africa. The small people of this indigenous tribe are probably the last living in true harmony with nature and have a wealth of Fauna and Flora knowledge to share with us. The two days are filled with tours and game walks guided by bushmen taking you on their traditional hunting tracks.

Day 12: Tarangire

After breakfast we depart for Tarangire, Tanzania’s third largest national park and sanctuary for an unusually large elephant population. Majestic baobab trees are an interesting feature of the park, dwarfing the animals that feed beneath them. Animals concentrate along the Tarangire River, which provides the only permanent water supply in the area. There is a great diversity of wildlife including lion, leopard, cheetah and up to six thousand elephant.

Day 13: Arusha

One final morning game drive before leaving. In the afternoon we will reach Arusha and you will stay in a day room at Mount Meru Game Lodge or similar. This is where your great safari circuit Tanzania tour ends. Departure transfer to airport for your onwards journey. Breakfast and lunch included.

Southern Circuit Safari- 12 Days Best Of Tanzania

Southern Circuit Safari

This Southern circuit safari to Selous, Mikumi, Ruaha and Udzungwa mountains, takes you to the most amazing places. In these four parks, all with their special atmosphere, you will meet hippos, crocodiles, lions, giraffes and many more walking around in the breathtaking scenery that is so tyical for Tanzania. Yes perfect, this I want to do.

Southern Circuit – 12 Days Best Of South Tanzania

Day 1: Arrival

You will be met at the airport at Dar es Salaam by your driver/guide and our representative. We will take you to the Swissgarden Hotel (or sim) for a day of rest, before starting your southern circuit safari the next day.

Day 2: Selous

After breakfast you will be picked up from the hotel, and drive to the Selous (5-6 hrs).You will take part in an afternoon boat safari along the mighty Rufiji River. Where you can see plenty of hippos, crocodiles and bird life.

Dinner and overnight at Rufiji River Camp which is a tented camp situated in the north-eastern part of the Selous Game Reserve on a high bank overlooking the Rufiji River and the plain beyond. The camp accommodates guests in 20 comfortable tents. Each tent has twin beds with mosquito nets, en-suite bathroom and a veranda facing the river. The central restaurant provides excellent cuisine. The camp makes maximum use of local materials, retaining an intimate relationship with the surrounding eco-system.

Day 3: Selous

You will participate in walking safaris, game drives and boating safaris as per the lodge schedule (sharing with other guests at the lodge) in Selous Game Reserve, Africa’s largest wildlife sanctuary, with an area of 54.600kms – bigger than Denmark and 4 times the size of Serenget!.

Selous has the world’s largest number of large game animals – elephant, buffalo, rhino. It also contains wildebeest, eland, giraffe, waterbuck, zebra, impala, hippo, leopard and lion, not to mention over 350 species of birds.

Dinner and overnight at the Rufiji River Camp. All meals included.

Day 4: Selous

In the morning you will depart to northern Selous, taking in the fascinating scenery and amazing wildlife en-route.

Day 5: Selous

Full day of game driving in northern Selous.Overnight at the Sable Mountain Lodge. All meals included.

Day 6: Mikumi National Park

In the morning you will depart to Mikumi National Park while crossing through Northern Selous.

Whilst on safari, you can see a rich variety of bird species, as well as large numbers of giraffe, buffalo and elephants. If you are lucky you may also be able to spot lions, leopards and African wild dogs. Likely to be seen animals include zebras, hippos, hartebeest, wildebeest, impala, warthog, eland and antelope. Several observation towers enable you to overview the park in its entirety.

Overnight in Vuma Hill Lodge. All meals included.

Day 7: Mikumi National Park

Full day of game drives in the Mikumi National Park.Overnight in Vuma Hill Lodge. All meals included.

Day 8: Udzungwa Mountain

Departure for Udzungwa Mountain National Park, arriving in the afternoon.Take part in half a day of hiking and bird-watching in the pristine rain forest: trekking towards the Sanje waterfalls for spectacular views of the wide Kilombero Valley.

Overnight in the Udzungwa Forest Camp. All meals included.

Day 9: Ruaha

After breakfast, depart for Ruaha, having lunch en-route.By afternoon you will have reached the Ruaha River Lodge, which is constructed on and around a rocky kopje which overlooks the Great Ruaha River. The Camp provides comfortable accommodation that blends into its surroundings and enables visitors to feel part of the wild. Both the dining “Banda” and the bar, are in elevated positions above the river, and combine comfort and coolness together with the most spectacular views.

Day 10-11: Ruaha

Two full days of game driving at Ruaha National Park, with picnic lunches. Ruaha has an area of 10,300sq.km, and is the second largest park, and second largest elephant sanctuary in Tanzania. The great Ruaha River that flows along its entire eastern border creates spectacular gorges and scenery, and features a large number of hippos and crocodiles. The wide variety of animals that inhabit the park include both Greater and Lesser Kudu, roan and sable antelope. Bird life is also rich, with over 370 species recorded.

Day 12: DEPARTURE

End of your southern circuit safari, departure to Dar es Salaam by flight, arriving late afternoon. Breakfast and lunch box provided.

Kilimanjaro Climb – Tanzania Safari

Day 1: ARRIVAL

You will be met at the International Airport of by your Driver/Guide and our representative. We will take you to the Mount Meru Game Lodge with an attached game sanctuary.

Our safari manager and Kilimanjaro Expert will come to meet you and give a safari briefing.

Overnight at Mount Meru Game Lodge. Dinner is included.

NB –if you arrive into another airport than Kilimanjaro we’ll arrange a connection flight to Arusha either on arrival or the following day (at extra cost). From Nairobi also road transfers in private or shared vehicles possible.

Day 2: Kilimanjaro – Arusha – Machame Gate – Machame Camp

After breakfast your Tanzania safari – Kilimanjaro climb starts and we will go to the Machame Park Gate (5,870 ft./ 1,790 mt.) to begin our climb through the lush forest.

Trekkers will likely hear the many exotic birds in the canopy above, and many even see black and white colobus monkeys and sykes monkeys as they hike along the knotted roots. We will continue on to some heath land before reaching our overnight camp at Machame Camp (9,875 feet, 5-7 hours of walking), just above the forest zone. The trek is quite long, thus not steep.

Day 3: Kilimanjaro – Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Today’s segment of the ascent will continue across beautiful heath land and afro-alpine moorland with magnificent views of Kilimanjaro Peak. We begin up the steep track through a savannah of tall grasses, and trees of Giant Heather and Erica. Scramble around large boulders as you enter the moorland zone, marked by lobelia and senecia plants, and volcanic rocks draped with lichen beards, which protect wild alpine flowers growing at their bases. We’ll overnight at Shira Camp (12,615 feet, 4-5 hours of walking).

Day 4: Mt Kilimanjaro – Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

We’ll draw nearer the peak as we get closer to the Lava Tower. The trek becomes a bit more strenuous as the trail steepens on the approach to the lava Tower, a 300 foot tall volcanic plug which marks an exposed pass at 15,000 feet. In the afternoon, descend the steep track into the Great Barranco Valley.

Barranco Camp is set on a col (flat area) enclosed on three sides with steep valley walls and the Kibo massif itself. Hanging glaciers glint in the sunshine above, amidst the eerie landscape of plants such as the giant groundsels (Senecio Kilimanjari), and the uniquely endemic Giant Lobelia. Then we slowly ascent to our overnight stop at Barranco Camp (12,990 feet, 5-6 hours of walking).

Day 5: Mt Kilimanjaro – Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp

The day will begin with a descent into the Gorge, before we climb its eastern wall where we will enjoy views of Kilimanjaro’s ice fields, an equatorial anomaly.

We will continue trekking following the lava ridge to the Barafu camp. The temperature will grow colder and the landscape more sparse as we near Barafu Camp. Barafu Camp is set on a small, exposed flat area on a ridge, acting as a base camp from which you will make your summit attempt at midnight tonight.

Day 6: Kilimanjaro – Barafu Camp to Summit to Mweka Camp

Just after midnight we start of a challenging trek(12-17 hours of trekking). You begin trekking at 12:00 to 1am, passing between the Rebmann and Tarzel glaciers to the rim at Stella Point. The temperatures range from just below freezing at midnight, to between 10 deg. F (-12 deg. C) to –10 F. (-23 deg. C) just before dawn at the summit.

As dawn nears, we’ll summit at Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 19,340 feet. Uhuru will be the culmination of – and the reward for – 6-7 hours of strenuous hiking. We’ll then descend back to Barafu Camp, resting for a while before continuing our descent to Mweka Camp (10,105 feet, 3-4 hours of walking on the descent).

Day 7: Kilimanjaro – Mweka Camp to Park Gate – Arusha

We’ll make our final descent to the park gate, a walk of about 2 to 3 hours which finalizes your Kilimanjaro climb. After bidding our farewells to our guide and porters, we’ll take you to Arusha for overnight at Mount Meru Game Lodge (or similar).

Day 8: Lake Manyara

After breakfast it is time to start your Tanzania safari and we depart for Lake Manyara. Nestling at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park is recognized for its incredible beauty. You can see many game animals such as Buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe, Impala, hippo and others.

Overnight at Kirurumu Tented Lodge or Rift Valley Lodge at Lake Manyara. All meals included.

Day 9: Lake Manyara – Serengeti

After breakfast we will head towards Serengeti National Park. After stopping for your picnic lunch on a kopje (rock outcropping) in Serengeti we will continue further into the park and go on a game drive.

Overnight at Mapito Tented Camp at Ikoma, Northern Serengeti. All meals included.

Day 10: Serengeti

A full day of game drives around Serengeti. Depending on the time of year and the migration of the herds you can expect to see wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds and other species.

Day 11: Ngorongoro

After breakfast we drive to Ngorongoro Conservation Area. After arrival we will decent into the crater for a wonderful game drive (with a picnic lunch) inside the Ngorongoro Crater.

As very few animals migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and other species. Your Driver/Guide will be in contact with other safari drivers and will amaze you with his skill at locating the hidden animals.

Overnight at Ngorongoro Farmhouse or Tloma Lodge in Karatu nearby. All meals included.

Day 12: Ngorongoro – Arusha/Kilimanjaro – DEPARTURE

After breakfast (or lunch depending on your flight schedule) we return to Arusha and onwards to Kilimanjaro for departure. Breakfast and lunch included.A dayroom will be arranged for your convenience if required.

Day 2: Arusha National Park

Spend a second day at your nice lodge in Arusha. Time to relax and accustomize or to explore the nearer surrounding. You can visit Arusha National Park for some first safari activities, hike at the slopes of Mt Meru, visit one of the villages nearby or explore Arusha Town.

Day 3-4: Ndarakwai / Western Kilimanjaro

After two relaxing days you start your tour with a drive to Ndarakwai a private concession area of more than 11`’000 acres. It started in 1995 as an experiment in self-sustaining conservation, preserves a variety of habitats that are home to over 70 mammal species, and 350 bird species (at last count). Ndarakwai is an important part of the Amboseli / Ngasurai eco-system and helps to preserve vital seasonal elephant routes. Many species (lesser kudu, Grants gazelle, warthogs, impala, wildebeest, giraffe, waterbuck, bushbuck, hyena, etc), are permanent residents on the ranch, while others (eland, zebra, buffalo, elephant, cheetah, etc) use Ndarakwai seasonally.

You spend 2 days at Ndarakwai and drive around in your own car or join in some safari activities offered by the ranch.

Accommodation is for 2 nights at Ndarakwai Ranch offering views of both Mt. Kilimanjaro and Mt. Meru and nestled in a protected forest of towering fig, and yellow-barked. All meals included.

Day 5-7: Karatu

From Sinya you drive to Karat a small friendly town located at the outer rim of Ngorongoro Crater ideally located to explore the Highlights of Northern Tanzania. You stay at a comfortable lodge facing the Oldeani Volcano, only 5 kilometers from the Ngorongoro Lolduare gate, was built to offer our clients an original experience reminiscent of the atmosphere of the old days. Ngorongoro Farm House offers comfortabele cottages with ample space inside, built on the style of an old colonial farm and rustically decorated with local materials and full of details of good taste, with the purpose of offering our clients an imaginary journey to the life of the days gone.

Activities include visits to Lake Manyara National Park; Tarangire National Park, Ngorongoro Conservation Area with the famous Ngorongoro Crater, excursions for hiking at the Northern Ngorongoro Highlands, cultural encounters, village and market visits, leisurely walks to the lodge’s own coffee plantations and gardens, Mountain biking, Crater Rim Nature Walks and more (extra expenses).

Day 8-10: Serengeti

Day 1: ARRIVAL

You will be met at the International Airport of Nairobi by your Driver/Guide and our representative and taken to your hotel, the traditional Stanley Hotel. Dinner is included.

Day 2: Nairobi – Aberdare Mountains

Departure from your Nairobi Hotel after breakfast and start your Kenya Tanzania Safari driving towards the Aberdares around noon. After a delicious lunch at Aberdare Country Club you will change into the lodge vehicle and be taken to your lodge. Accommodation will be at the unique The Ark, a tree-top style stilted lodge is set in thick woodland in the heart of the Aberdare National Park overlooking a floodlit waterhole and a salt lick which attracts a host of wildlife. Elephants, rhinos, leopards and bush bucks are frequently seen. Numerous Balconies and lounges provide superb game viewing and excellent photographic opportunities. Day 3: Aberdare Mountains – Lake Nakuru

After breakfast you proceed to Lake Nakuru, one of the Rift Valley soda lakes and best known for its thousands, sometimes millions of flamingos nesting along the shores. The surface of the shallow lake is often hardly recognizable due to the continually shifting mass of pink. The number of flamingos on the lake varies with water and food conditions and the best vantage point is from Baboon Rocks. Also of interest, an area of 188 km around the lake fenced off as a sanctuary to protect Rothchild giraffe and black rhinos.

Overnight at the Lion Hill Lodge at Lake Nakuru, beautifully located close to the entrance with a view over Lake Nakuru. All meals included.

Day 4: Lake Nakuru – Masai Mara

Early morning game drive if you wish. After breakfast you proceed make your way to Masai Mara with viewing various games on the way, birds, herds of Antelopes, Zebra, giraffe, Elephants, gazelle, etc. Lunch will be taken at ‘Elsamere Conservation, former home to George and Joy Adamson famous for their work with lions and the book and movie ‘Born Free’. At Masai Mara you go for an afternoon game drive with high chances of seeing the’ Big five’ and many other wild animals set to retire for the day.

Day 5: Masai Mara

Fullday of game drive at Maasai Mara.. Depending on the game drive nature you will have a great moment to visit the famous Mara River whereby different types of animals mingle to drink water, Picnic lunch in the bush. You will have either at Masai Mara or Serengeti the chance to experience the ‘Great Migration’ and some 1.5 millions of wild beast an zebras on the move.

Day 6: Masai Mara – Isebania – Lake Victoria

Early morning game drive at Masai Mara and return to the Camp for breakfast. Proceed to Isebania for Border crossing into Tanzania. After visa and border procedures we drive along the lake shore to Musoma one of the major towns at Lake Victoria In Musoma we embark a traditional fishing Dhow Boat (journey approx 45 min) which will take us to an Island in Lake Victoria and to a private Island retreat, the Lukuba Island Lodge. Rest of the day at leisure and possibility to swim in the warm water of Lake Victoria. All meals included.

If you wish to rest a bit ‘in between’ the national park visits and safari activities we advise to extend your stay at the beautiful Lukuba Island Lodge. You can rest at the snowwhite sandy beach, sunbath and read, take a stroll over the rocky island, go by a traditional dhow around the neighouring islands for bird and nile monitor watching, fishing etc.

Day 7: Lake Victoria – Serengeti

In the morning we go out for a boat trip on Lake Victoria by local fishermen. Afterwards you proceed towards Ndabaka Gate and enter Serengeti through the Western Corridor. You pass through green Savannah with Elephants and Giraffes roaming around through a stretch of land which is rarely visited by travelers to reach Central Serengeti. The name Serengeti comes from the Maasai word “Siringet” referring to an endless plain which you will experience on your way to your camp.

Day 8: Serengeti

A full day of game drives around Serengeti. You can expect to see wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds and other species. We are very flexible with choosing our route will be on the track with the migration on its way to Masai Mara.

Day 9: Serengeti – Ngorongoro

Early morning game drive after tea/coffee which is the best time to see the animals as they get out from their hide for the morning preys or return from their night hunt. After late breakfast you leave for Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Arrival to Ngorongoro for lunch. In the afternoon you go for a Nature Walk at the Northern Crater Rim inhabited by buffaloes, elephants and different species of monkeys escorted by a local guide.

Day 10: Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you will descend into the crater for a wonderful game drive (with a picnic lunch) . The Ngorongoro Crater is a World Heritage Site holding a permanent population of more than 30 000 animals. As only very few of those migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and other species. The Crater is also home to the rare black rhino almost extinct in Tanzania. With a bit of luck you will see the ‘Big Five’ during one game drive.

Day 11: Ngorongoro – Lake Manyara

In the morning you drive to Lake Manyara National Park. Nestling at the base of the Great Rift Valley Escarpment, the park is recognized for its incredible beauty with lush vegetation and tropical forests of giant fig and mahogany trees. Lots of elephants, giraffe, buffalo, zebra and a variety of antelope inhabit the park as well as a variety of monkeys and a large population of hippos. If you are lucky you may see the Manyara lions, well known for their tree climbing habits, lazily resting on the branches of an “Acacia tortilis” tree. The bird life is also abundant, with flamingos, pelicans, hornbills and plenty of forest species.

Day 12: Lake Manyara – Arusha – Nairobi

End of your Kenya Tanzania Safari. Time at leisure in the morning until your departure transfer to Kilimanjaro Airport for departure or to Arusha Airport for your flight to Zanzibar for beach extension. Breakfast included.

Day 1: ARRIVAL

You will be met at the International Airport of Dar Es Salaam by your Driver/Guide and our representative. We will take you to the Accomondia Hotel for overnight.

Day 2: Dar Es Salaam – Mikumi

After breakfast you start your southern Tanzania safari and leave for Mikumi Nationalpark (transfer some 4-5 hours from Dar Es Salaam outskirts), being nestled between the Uruguru Mountains to the East and the Rift Valley Escarpments to the Southwest. As it is close to the Selous ecosystem and therefore part of it, it benefits from the highest game density of the entire conservation area. The Mikumi National Park obtains a good impression of the African animal world and is suitable very well for a short visit. After arrival at Mikumi National Park you go on game drives around the park.

Day 3: Mikumi National Park

Full day of safari around Mikumi. There is a rich variety bird species as well as large numbers of giraffes, buffaloes and elephants and close to the water holes also lions, leopards and hippos. Furthermore you can see zebras, lions, wild dogs, pythons, hartebeest, wildebeest, elephants, impala, warthog, eland and other antelopes. Several observation towers enable you to overview the park in its entirety. Mikumi National Park is mostly miombo woodland with gently rolling hills..You also go on a walking safari to the African Bush with an armed ranger.

Day 4: Udzungwa Mountain National Park

Departure for Udzungwa Mountain National Park. Afternoon arrival at the park, half day of hiking and bird-watching in the pristine rain forest: hiking towards the Sanje waterfalls for spectacular views of the wide Kilombero Valley. Pls note that the hike can be quite strenous. If you prefer you can also walk towards a Rubber Plantation and learn about the process to produce natural latex.

Overnight at Hondo Hondo Udzungwa Forest Camp (Accommodation in a en suite luxury tent). All meals included.

Day 5: Udzungwa Mountain National Park

Today your guide will take you to the Hidden Waterfall Trail taking you to Njokamoni Waterfall, right back into Hondo Hondo. It’s a long, steep walk that climbs to over 1000m, so you should plan to leave early. It is necessary to take a ranger on this hike as there are large mammals deep in the forest. You will certainly see plenty of wildlife on this trail. Once you’ve climbed the sometimes steep trail to the ridge, you walk through the flat grassy bottoms of some beautiful hidden valleys (hence our name for the trail) often frequented by elephants.

Overnight at Hondo Hondo Udzungwa Forest Camp (Accommodation at en suite tents). All meals included.

NB- this is a moderately tough hiking tour which takes some 7-8 hours for some 15 km. If you like a ‘lighter’ version your guide will take you across the road via the friendly local town of Mwaya towards a Rubber Plantation where you can see how local Latex is produced (this excursion can take some 4-5 hours).

Day 6: Ruaha National Park

After breakfast, depart for Ruaha National Park (long drive of some 7-8 hours via Mikumi and Iringa). In the afternoon we reach the lodge constructed on and around a rocky kopje overlooking the Great Ruaha River. The Lodge provide comfortable accommodation and good food while blending into its surroundings to enable visitors to feel themselves a part of the wild. Both the dining “Banda” and the bar, in elevated position above the river combine comfort and coolness together with the most spectacular views.

Day 7-8: Ruaha National Park

Two full day game drives at Ruaha National Park with picnic lunch. Ruaha, with an area of 10,300sq.km. Is the second largest park, and second largest elephant sanctuary in Tanzania. The great Ruaha River that flows along its entire eastern border, creating spectacular gorges and scenery, features a large number of hippos and crocodiles. The wide variety of animals include Greater and Lesser Kudu, roan and sable antelope. Bird life is rich, with over 370 species recorded.

Day 9: Ruaha – Iringa

After a last morning game drive you depart for Iringa. En route you visit the Museum of Kalenga the former headquarter of the Wahehe and residents of their chief Mkwawa leading a fierce opposition against the German occuapation during the colonial times. At Isimilia Stone Age Site you see old Stoneage Tools and wander through an amazing Canyon with picturesque limestone pillars. Reach your lodge in the outskirts of Iringa for dinner.

Day 10: Iringa-Dar Es Salaam

Day 1: ARRIVAL

Day 2: Arusha-Katavi (Mon or Thur)

After breakfast you will be taken to Arusha Airport for your shared charter flight to Katavi National Park at Southwestern Tanzania leaving at 08:00 hrs and reaching Katavi at around 11:30. Your guide will take you to to Katuma Bush Lodge for lunch.

The Lodge is situated in the centre of the park, on an elevated point overlooking the vast plains of Katisunga. Herds of animals coming in search of fresh grazing grounds and water provide the perfect view right from your tent.

Tamarind and Acacia trees provide shade and the sunsets behind the distant woodlands surrounding the seasonal lake provide a perfect background to the stunning scenery. Day 3-4: Katavi Safari

2 full days at Katavi National Park Tanzania’s third largest national park, it lies in the remote southwest of the country, within a truncated arm of the Rift Valley that terminates in the shallow, brooding expanse of Lake Rukwa.

You go on game drives around woodland areas along the seasonal lakes of Chada and Katavi, where most of the game is found – including the big cats. Day 5: Katavi-Mahale safari

Morning at leisure until your departure to Katavi Airstrip (with a packed lunch) for your your short scenic flight to Mahale Mountain National Park located at the banks of Lake Tanganyika. At Mahale Airstrip your boat is waiting for you to take you to Kungwe Beach Lodge located on a long stretch of Lake Tanganyika’s golden sandy shores beneath magnificent Mahale Mountains.

The camp consists of 10 spacious and luxurious tents with en-suite facilities overlooking the crystal clear waters of Tanganyika. The camp manager is waiting for you for a briefing and to discuss your customized programme for you. In the afternoon you go on a first short Chimpanzee Tracking in the forest near the camp.

Day 6-8: Mahale National Park

3 full days at Lake Tanganyika to explore Mahale Mountains. Chimpanzee tracking is the main attraction at Mahale, and is always given a high priority. Tracking usually begins early in the morning, with the guides usually starting at the area where the Chimpanzees nested the previous night and tracking from there. In Mahale tracking can take up to four hours.

Chimpanzees move in search of fruit, and are never far away if there’s an abundance of fruit nearby. Other activities include walking on the beach, swimming and snorkeling in the cristall clear waters of Tanganyika.

Also fishing trips to Tanganyika being an angler’s paradise can be arranged with experienced boatmen of the camp (boat trips at some extra cost). It is also possible to visit local fishing villages close to the park and get first hand experience of life in a typical African village.

Day 9: Mahale-Arusha

Day 2: Cultural Encounters in Arusha

Today you will take an excursion in the nearby surroundings of your lodge, meaning you can relax a little, sleep in a bit if you want, and stay in your lodge without having to pack up again after just one night.
You have the choice between three different options. Please choose the one suiting the needs of your family best:

Arusha National Park

After breakfast drive to Arusha National Park, once the site of the action packed Hollywood movie Hatari, starring John Wayne and Hardy Kruger. You pass by herds of zebra, buffalo, and giraffe on the savannah. Enjoy a picnic lunch at Momella Lake, famous for huge flocks of colourful flamingos and its views at majestic Mt. Kilimanjaro. You continue in the afternoon with a game drive around the different habitats in this truly beautiful national park.There are black and white colobus monkeys (unique to this location northern Tanzania), Sykes’s and vervet monkeys, shy forest duikers, elusive leopards and substantial herds of antelope.
If you wish, you can hike at the slopes of Mt Meru in dense forest or at the Crater rim while an armed ranger escorts you to protect you from some of the larger animals.

Alternatively, you could do some cultural visits instead of visiting Arusha National Park. We offer as follows:

Mulala

Full day excursion to Mulala, a picturesque village located of the slopes of Mt Meru, to visit the people living here and to get a glimpse of the daily life of Meru farmers growing vegetables and crops. Together with a local guide you walk from Mama Anna’s farm, crisscrossing coffee plantations and banana farms to the top of Lemeka Hill, and back down to the Marisha River, which is home of colorful birds and playful monkey. The village women will prepare some simple but tasty lunch for you before you return to Arusha.

Nkoaranga Village

Full day excursion to the small village of Nkoaranga. This is home to a local fair-trade coffee growers’ cooperative, made up of a group of small-farm coffee growers working together to build a sustainable, naturally grown, fair trade coffee business. Visit the coffee plantations and see the different steps of coffee growing. Learn about how coffee beans are collected, processed, roasted, ground and carefully packed. All proceeds from coffee sales return to the local farmers for reinvestment in the project, and to build their burgeoning organic farming project – with the first organic bean harvest scheduled within the next two years. Lunch is taken in the village before you return to Arusha. A walk through the village and at the local school or an orphanage is also included if desired.

Day 3: Lake Manyara

After breakfast we depart for Lake Manyara (driving time some 2.5 – 3 hours). Nestling at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, the park is recognized for its incredible beauty. You can see many game animals such as Buffalo, Elephant, Giraffe, Impala, hippo and others. After spending most of the day in the car you might enjoy a leisurely stroll along Kirurumu River which has to be crossed on large rocks a couple of times. This is a great chance to get out your vehicle and explore this beautiful area on foot. Note that wet muddy feet cannot entirely be avoided…!

You will make the short journey towards Ngorongoro directly after your day of game driving at Lake Manyara, meaning you can make it down to the crater floor early morning the following day. Spend the evening at Country Lodge, an rustic lodge at the outskirts of Ngorongoro Conservation Area with comfortable rooms in a large tropical garden around an inviting swimming pool. All meals included.Transfer time without game viewing 3 hours.

Day 4: Around Karatu

Today you spend a day around Karatu and visit the lively market, you go on a guided walk either to the nearby coffee plantations or if you want it a bit more sportive to Ganeko Hill in some distance. If you are lucky one of the weekly colorful Maasai Markets is held, and you can visit an old descendent from the ancient Iraqw Tribe who will be happy to introduce you to his culture and history.

Day 5: Ngorongoro – Serengeti

After breakfast you start on your way to Serengeti National Park (driving time some 4 hours, but with plenty to see on the way!) En route you will see grazing zebras, antelopes and giraffes and sometimes some buffalos hiding in the bush. You will visit a Maasai Boma (traditional village) where some Maasai Warriors will welcome you, show you around and explain their traditional life. They will also show you their famous jumping dance and invite you to join in if you like! You can also see inside houses, meet children, ask questions and take photos!

After stopping for your picnic lunch on a kopje (rock outcropping) in Serengeti you will continue further into the park and go on a game drive in the afternoon. Depending on the time of year and the migration of the herds you can expect to see wildebeest, lions, elephants, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, rhinos, antelopes and many birds and other species.

Tonight and the following night you spend in a comfortable tented camp at the edge of the famous Serengeti, with views over the endless savannah with some animals and typically African acacia trees. Enjoy some relaxing hours at the camp fire under open sky after dinner, chatting with other guests and the charismatic security guards.Transfer time without game viewing 4 hours.

Day 6: Serengeti

Spend a leisurely day on game drives around Serengeti. It is one of the few places where the rare black rhino can be observed in their natural setting. Day 9: Lake Eyasi

From Ngorongoro you proceed to Lake Eyasi home to the hunter-gathers ethnic group of the Hadzabe Bushmen bearing similar characteristics to those of Bushmen at Southern Africa. The small people of this indigenous tribe are probably the last living in true harmony with nature and have a wealth of Fauna and Flora knowledge to share with us. Around Lake Eyasi you will also visit the remotely living Datoga Tribe famous for their colorful leather dresses. Day 9: Lake Eyasi – Arusha – Kilimanjaro – DEPARTURE

In the morning you go out with the Hadzabe Bushmen for a morning hunt or walk (depending on your schedule either at 06:30 or later around 09:00 hrs). After completing your visit with the Hadzabe and Datoga you return to Arusha and onwards to Kilimanjaro for departure, where your family safari ends. A day room will be arranged for your comfort. Family Safari Southern Tanzania

Day 1: ARRIVAL

Your family safari Southern Tanzania starts when you are met at the International Airport of Dar Es Salaam by your driver/guide and our representative. We will take you to the Holiday Inn (or similar hotel ) in Dar Es Salaam for overnight.

Day 2: Dar Es Salaam – Selous Game Reserve

After breakfast you start your family safari Southern Tanzania Pick up from the hotel for your drive to Selous Game Reserve (driving some 5-7 hours). You arrive at your lodge in the afternoon in time for a late lunch at your lodge, taking your time to absorb the wild African surroundings. After lunch and some rest you explore the area around your lodge a little on a guided walking tour along the river banks of Rufiji River. You walk between shrubs and old mahogany trees, watching playful monkeys in the canopy and hippos grunting and socializing in the water. Return to your lodge in time for a cold sundowner.

Day 3: Selous Safari

Full day of game drives at Selous Game Reserve, named after famous explorer Frederick Selous. The Selous Game Reserve a vast protected wildlife reserve – a UN World Heritage site and a pristine uninhabited area larger than Switzerland. The topography of the park varies from rolling savannah woodland, grassland plain and rocky outcrops cut by the Rufiji River and its tributaries. Activities are game drives, a thrilling and educational walking safari and a boat trip at Rufiji River.

Day 4: Selous Game Reserve

Today you take some cultural excursions to a nearby village. See the local daily life of rural Tanzania in the remote countryside and enjoy some insights into local culture as well as encounters with the friendly villagers. This is a great chance to try out some rudimentary Swahili!

Day 5: Selous – Mikumi

After breakfast you will proceed to the next exciting stop of your safari circuit. First you cross a vast and remote part of Northern Selous on some bumpy and partly dusty roads towards Morogoro Town and onwards to Mikumi National Park, where you reach your camp in the afternoon. Vuma Hills Tented Camp is perched above the trees stretching over the seemingly endless wilderness south west of Mikumi National Park, an ideal place to evoke the true spirit of Africa.

After a short rest you go on an afternoon game drive at Mikumi. Depending on your game drive there is time for a dip in the pool before you get ready for the evening. At your camp there is a special feeding area where rare honey badgers and civet cats can be seen in the evening.

Day 6: Mikumi Safari

Today you explore Mikumi further on a full day safari. A day at Mikumi National Park provides a good impression of African safari wildlife and is very well suited for a short visit. There is a rich variety of bird species as well as large numbers of buffaloes and elephants, and a great many giraffe which can be seen traversing the plains with their unique ambling gait. Close to the water holes lions, leopards and hippos can also be found. Other species residing here include zebras, wild dogs, pythons, hartebeest, wildebeest, elephants, impala, warthog, eland and other antelopes. Several observation towers enable you to overview the rolling miombo woodland and wide open plains of Mikumi in its entirety – an amazing view. Together with an armed ranger you will also go for a walking safari to the bush while your guide shows you shrubs, footprints and animal tracks.

Day 7: Udzungwa Mountain National Park

After breakfast your depart for Udzungwa Mountain National Park (drive of some 2 hours), one of the most interesting bio-diversity and unique rainforest areas of East Africa, where many extremely rare plants and animal species have been identified (and indeed continue to be discovered). Among the six types of primates there are two endemic species found nowhere else in the world – the Udzungwa Colobus Monkey and the Sanje Crested Mangabey. You arrive at your camp late morning for a day of walking and bird-watching in the pristine rain forest, hiking towards the Sanje waterfalls for spectacular views of the wide Kilombero Valley. If you wish, you can bath and play around in the pools at the waterfalls.

For the next 3 nights you stay at the unique Udzungwa Forest Camp, set on spacious lush green grounds on the border of the pristine rainforest. Children can roam free around the camp, running on the grass, taking in the magical views of the forest canopy, relaxing at the regular campfires in the night, or even spending some time bug-watching!

Overnight in the Hondo Hondo Udzungwa Forest Camp (Accommodation in a en suite luxury tent). All meals included.

Day 8-9: Udzungwa Mountain National Park

Spend 2 more active days at Udzungwa Forest Camp, filled with fun suited to the needs of you and your family. Activities to choose from include a (quite tough) hike to the mountain national park, a walking tour to Mwaya Town and onwards to the Rubber Plantation (to see where natural latex comes from and how it is processed), a relaxing few hours on a traditional dug out canoe floating along the Kilomero River (excellent for budding birdwatchers!), and mountain-biking around Kilombero Valley. One activity is offered per day as per your preference.

2 x Overnight in the Hondo Hondo Udzungwa Forest Camp. All meals included.

Day 10: Udzungwa – Dar Es Salaam

End of your Family Safari Tanzania South. After breakfast you return by road to Dar es Salaam (some 6-7 hours) for departure, or a fun-packed beach holiday on the Island of Zanzibar.

Out of Africa – Itinerary

Day 1: ARRIVAL

You will be met at the International Airport of Kilimanjaro by your driver/guide and our representative. You will then transfer to Hatari Lodge – a stunning and innovatively designed lodge, former home of German film star Hardy Krueger, overlooking the Momella Swamps and Buffalo Meadow. Both the looming Mount Kilimanjaro and the dramatic peaks of Mount Meru are visible in the distance. Depending on your arrival schedule you will have time to relax and enjoy your dinner in beautiful surroundings.

Day 2: Arusha National Park

Your out of Africa experience starts with a full day of safari activities in and around Hatari Lodge. All activities have been specially designed by the passionate and dedicated owner-managers, who have combined their years of knowledge to create something really quite special. Activities include boating on the Momella Lakes, walking at Mount Meru Crater, and birding in the lands between Kilimanjaro and Meru – a veritable bird-lovers paradise. Knowledgeable and enthusiastic guides will accompany you throughout.

Day 3: Serengeti

After a leisurely breakfast and morning your guide will take you to West Kili Airstrip nearby for your flight to Serengeti at around 12:30 hrs. Upon arrival at around 14:30 your camp driver will welcome you and take you to your camp. Spend the rest of the day at leisure and enjoy a beautiful sunset over the savannah. If you wish, you can go on a nature walk around the camp later in the afternoon.

You will overnight at Mapito – a luxury tented camp located in a wildlife-rich area, where you can tuck into delicious bush food, warm yourself by the crackling campfire, and drift off to the sound of a lion roaring in the distance.

Day 4&5: Serengeti

Two full days to explore this, the world’s most wild and famous wildlife sanctuary. Early morning game drive to see also nocturnal predators returning from hunting and animals waking up in early morning light . Full day of game drives around Serengeti. Depending on the time of year and the migration of the herds you can expect to see wildebeest, giraffes, zebras, monkeys, baboons, hippos, antelopes, myriad bird species and, of course, the fabled “Big Five” – lion, elephant, cape buffalo, black rhino and leopard. Enjoy your picnic lunches in the bush, cautiously approach the hippo pool, and generally marvel at the rough, rugged and ever-expanding wilderness which surrounds you.

Day 6: Ngorongoro

After breakfast you will descend into the crater for a wonderful game drive (with a picnic lunch) inside the Ngorongoro Crater– often described as one of the wonders of the world. It is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera and a natural sanctuary for the dense population of animals which inhabit it. It is one of the few places where the rare black rhino can be observed in their natural setting. As very few animals migrate in and out of the crater with its 2000 ft. high walls, you can expect to see lions, elephants, zebras, hippos, flamingos, jackals, rhinos, antelopes, many birds and myriad other species. With a bit of luck the ‘Big Five’ can be spotted on just one single game drive! You will overnight at the Ngorongoro Serena Lodge – unbridled luxury on the crater rim.

Day 7: Ngorongoro – Manyara Ranch

Take a morning nature walk at the Northern Crater Rim of the Ngorongoro Crater, where you will spot birds and monkeys, and whatever else you may happen across! Escorted by a ranger or Maasai guide, you will track the animal paths through dense bush, and really experience the sights, sounds and scents of this stunning and pristine corner of the world.

After your walk, depart for Manyara Ranch Conservancy a wildlife-rich corridor between Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Here, you will spend two days exploring and discovering, as per your own personalized safari schedule. The camp manager, an experience and enthusiastic safari guide, will greet you and discuss with you your program preferences for the next two days. Afterwards, you can take in the beautiful landscape, enjoy a delicious dinner, watch zebra and wildebeest wandering past your window, before resting in your luxury tent.

Day 8-9: Manyara Ranch

Full days of safari activities at the private Manyara Ranch Conservancy (home to eland, greater kudu, striped hyena, bull elephant, breeding giraffes, wildebeest, zebra, oryx, lion, cheetah, leopard and the rarely seen bat-eared fox) as per your specific wishes. This may include cultural visits to nearby villages, nature walks in the surrounding landscape, night time game drives also off road, watching animals along the river from hides and more – and all with a flair of unique Manyara Ranch luxury!

Day 10: DEPARTURE

Early morning game driving / safari activities as per your wishes and specific schedule. End of your out of Africa safari. Depart Manyara Ranch after breakfast and transfer to Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport for your onward journey.

NB – if you have an early departure from Kilimanjaro Airport (earlier than mid afternoon) we suggest to return to Arusha on the previous day and spend your last night in Arusha instead.
